A bare stage can be very successful, but only if the actors are very good as well. In Shakespeares time the sound of thunder could be made with rolling cannon balls and drums. Usually squibs were used in scenes like this, which could give off a great amount of noise. If I were to use modern technology I would probably use the sounds of thunder and dark, dingy lighting to create an effect of a black sky. I might cover the stage floor with dry ice or a smoke machine in order to create the illusion of a boat rather than just a bare stage. This effect and the actors movements could make the swaying of the ship or violent rocking motion more believable if it is hard to tell where the stage floor is. I might just have large bits of wood scattered about the stage with a couple of wooden poles standing with white cloth draped over them to create an effect of a decrepit state. To create an illusion of rain I might use the sound of rain and actors entering the stage with wet clothes and wet hair. What I have also noticed in other productions of The Tempest is that although Ariel conjures up the storm he is never present in the first scene. I think that this is because the impact that this scene would have would be considerably lessened. The reason for this is that I think that the storm is meant to be realistic; with an airy spirit flying around the mast I think that the intensity of the scene would be lost, as I found out with a production that I took part in. I have found that with some productions of The Tempest people have cut out most of the scene completely. Taking Dereck Jarmans The Tempest, the first scene is of Prospero sleeping but with a very disturbed sleep, full of nightmares. There are quick shots of footage of a storm, then back to Prosperos face, as if we are looking at parts of his dreams. I think that this was very ineffective because it lacked the dramatic impact that the first scene would have had if it were included and there was no show of the power struggles, no introduction to characters. The second production I have seen of The Tempest is by John Gorrie. Although the acting was very bad, the scene took place on a proper ship and incorporated the full scene. There were realistic sounds and special effects such as the rocking of the ship and rain. Georgia, The Constitutiona In the 1971 Supreme court case of Furman V. Georgia, the constitutionality of the death penalty was challenged. The majority opinion held that although the way it was being applied was unconstitutional the death penalty itself was constitutional. They held it unconstitutional because since it was applied arbitrarily and with apparent racial and economic bias it was cruel and unusual. In Weems v. United states (1910) the Supreme Court held that a punishment could be considered cruel and unusual if it is excessive. In Dulles v. Trop the court held that "the basic concept underlying the 8th amendment is nothing less than the dignity of man." According to the court if a punishment denies someone human dignity than it is cruel and unusual. Combined these two cases set the precedent that both (1)breaks the past notion that the only things considered cruel and unusual are the specific things barred at the time the Constitution was penned and (2) says that what is excessive and what attacks human dignity evolves with society. Our society has evolved to the point where we will apply sanctions to other countries to try and prevent them from harming their own citizens. We no longer clamor for public bloodshed, it is something we don't want to see, our society has grown past the death-penalty. It is my feeling that capital punishment is always wrong. The Justice I am in most agreement with is Justice Brennan. His reasoning is that, it is an affront to basic human dignity and he sets up four rules to help determine this. First a punishment may not be so severe as to degrade the dignity of human beings, second it cannot be arbitrary, no conflict with contemporary moral decency and lastly it must be the least severe punishment that achieves the intended goal. We both agree capital punishment breaks all four rules and is therefore against constitutional law. I feel (as stated above) that capital punishment detracts from the dignity of not just the one human that society feels compelled to put to death, but it demeans all of society. I am pretty much a pacifist, I feel that all murder except in the self-defense of another human is wrong. Therefore I feel that people who commit murder should be punished harshly but that does not mean I feel they should be killed. When society decides to take the life of a convicted murderer it is stopping down to the level of the murderer; essentially degrading us all. It is responding to one wrong, with another wrong (two wrongs do not make a right). Killing the murderer serves no purpose, it has not been shown to deter other murders, it does not bring back the person killed, it does not protect society in ways that long-term imprisonment could not, and on top of that it costs more. The only purpose that the death-penalty serves is that of revenge or retribution. Some will make a distinction between the two, noting that retribution is a legal act performed by the government. The government has no power that is not granted to it by the people so essentially, a government act, is an act of the people; capital punishment is the government taking revenge on behalf of the people. Many proponents of capital punishment say that death is the only punishment that people convicted of murder deserve, anything less would not be harsh enough. This causes several problems. One is that many people consider death the easy way out, for example, some say suicide is for wimps. It is actually much harsher punishment on a murderer to confine him to a cell for the rest of his/her life; killing him is a very short-lived punishment. Also in other respects the death penalty may be too severe, although the person is not "punished" per se by long term sanctions on them, they are denied the basic human dignity of existing. Aya has some help getting it right from her famous brother Hiro, her tech friend Ren, her boyfriend Frizz, the always-helpful David, and the Cutters: Shay, Fausto, and Tally. These eight people discover the truth behind the metal shortage and the inhuman freaks, while once again trying to save themselves and the world from destruction. Aya Fuse, accompanied by her hover cam Moggle, crashes a party hoping to track down a group she saw surfing aà mag-levà train, a story which she believes will make her famous. She follows one of the group's members, Eden Maru, out of the party, but they nearly get away when she is distracted by Frizz Mizuno. Aya leaves without telling Frizz her full name. She then follows Eden into an underground cave, where she is ambushed by the mag-lev riders, who call themselves the Sly Girls. The group's leader Jai gives Aya a chance to join them, but to do so she is forced to drop Moggle into an underground lake. The next day, she visits her brother Hiro. Hiro and his friend Ren Machino refuse to believe Aya's tale of the Sly Girls because they are an urban legendà in the city. Ren agrees to help Aya retrieve Moggle. Aya also happens upon a story about Frizz, discovering that he started a clique based aroundà brain surgery which enforces honesty. That evening, Aya goes mag-lev surfing with the Sly Girls. Inside are many large cylinders of metal and a large chute leading to the top of the mountain, neither of which are understood by the Sly Girls. They plan to return to explore further, but Aya's credibility is ruined by the kicking of a news story about Frizz Mizuno coming to talk to her by her dorm. Aya is forced to break off contact with Frizz in order to lose fame. The story leaves her disillusioned by the hateful comments of the kickers. However, she does have the chance to tell Hiro and Ren about the Sly Girls story. Ren guesses that the chute inside the mountain is aà mass driveà which, combined with the steel projectiles, could be used to launch an attack on the city. When Aya next meets the Sly Girls they reveal that they knew she was a kicker, and have decided to allow her to kick the story of the mass driver. They launch themselves and Aya out of the mass driver with homemade parachutes. This gives them one last thrill before they part ways, and also giving The Sly Girls time to move on to a different city. Aya kicks her story and becomes instantly famous, but is concerned when she receives a message from Tally Youngblood. The message tells her to ââ¬Å"run and hideâ⬠, and Aya is nearly captured by the inhumans while trying to do so. Eventually, Aya uses her fame to take control of a high-security apartment, and waits there until Tally arrives accompanied by Shay and Fausto. After talking, the Cutters go hover boarding with Aya, Hiro, Frizz and Ren. Aya has a signal up for her hover cam, and the Cutters boost it so the inhumans could find them. They are soon captured, and on the inhumans ship Frizz ruins their plan. The Cutters knock out the inhumans and put the hover car on autopilot. The Cutters, Aya, Frizz, Hiro, and Ren jump out of the hover car. They then have to travel through a jungle to meet David. After deciding Aya, Ren, Hiro, and Frizz would get in the way, Tally, Shay, and Fausto plan to leave them where they were. Meanwhile the Cutters, would go to destroy the ships of the inhumans. Although her life was full of death, she still lived as happy a life as she could by writing in such a bold and daring way. Kate Chopin was born as Catherine O'Flaherty. She was born July 12, 1850. She is the daughter of Thomas and Eliza O'Flaherty. Kate's father, Thomas O'Flaherty, was born in Ireland in 1805. He came to the United States in 1823. In 1825 he became a merchant in St. Louis. In 1855 he died suddenly in a train wreck when she was only four. His sudden death pushed all his family into new relationships with each other and the world. Thomas' first wife, Catherine de Reilhe, married Thomas in 1839. She was a French-Creole girl, who died after giving birth to their son, George. In 1844, Thomas married Eliza Faris. They had three children together: Jane, who died at childbirth; Thomas Jr.; and Catherine, who we know as Kate Chopin. After the father's death, Eliza had to cope with being a widow. Kate's childhood consisted of a widowed mother, and a widowed great-grandmother. As a child, Kate experienced many deaths. She became emotionally close to her half brother George O'Flaherty. George was a Confederate solider during the Civil War and died from typhoid fever after being released from prison in 1862. After her father and brother's death, Kate seemed to have collapsed. She became faintly ill, and it took her two to three years to recover the traumatizing events of her childhood. These events changed her permanently which made her very wary. Kate's great-grandmother, Madame Charleville, taught her French. In fact, that was the only thing she would speak around Kate. Madame Charleville would tell Kate stories about the French. Giving Kate a history lesson about how the French founded the city along the banks of the Mississippi. Some of these stories were false, but Kate didn't know the difference. A handsome kid, really. Sharp gray eyes, lean and narrow-waisted, and when he died it was almost beautiful, the way the sunlight came around him and lifted him up and sucked him high into a tree full of moss and vines and white blossoms. (OBrien p.70). These are the types of pains that can only be understood by having felt them yourself, the type of pain that lives deep within you forever, whether you want to remember it or not. Embarrassment was probably one of the more hidden feelings in the war. In theà chapter titled On the Rainy River, OBrien tells of something so deeply embarrassing, that he was too ashamed to tell even his closest friends, and family. He, being an anti-war individual at the time, would rationally have been opposed to fighting for a cause he didnt believe in. He ran. Running was a popular choice for those who were opposed to, or just scared of, war. At some point in mid-July I began thinking seriously about Canada. The border lay a few hundred miles north, and eight-hour drive. Both my conscience and my instincts were telling me to make a break for it, just take off and run like hell and never stop.(OBrien p.44). In the book he fled to the border, but stopped to rest before he crossed. His rest was the duration of six days. He was in a continuous battle with his conscience. He thought of his parents, the shame they would be faced with because of their sons weakness. He could hear his townspeople and peers mocking him. He couldnt risk the embarrassment. He submitted. I would go to war-I would kill any maybe did-because I was too embarrassed not too.(OBrien p.59.). The emotion considered by many to be the strongest of all emotions, was the focus, and title of the second chapter. Love tells of a young lieutenant, and the object of his affection, a girl from his hometown, Martha. Among the things in which Lieutenant Cross humped were two photographs, a good luck pebble, and letters from Martha. Lieutenant Cross kept to himself. He pictured Marthas smooth young face, thinking he loved her more than anything, more than his men, and now Ted Lavender was dead because he loved her so much and could not stop thinking about her.(OBrien p.7). When emotions like love make you think more of home, and less of the war, mistakes are inevitable; they simply affect your ability to work. Lieutenant Cross found this out the hard way. He burned Marthas pictures and letters. He would have to carry the burden of his mistakes, regret. A struggle with ones morality could be expected for any man. It all came down to one question. Am I willing to kill another man? Should I kill and live with the heavy guilt and burden on my conscience, or perish knowing the consequences youd be faced with would be worse. OBrien made a choice, he chose to live, and kill, and kill he did. In the chapter The Man I Killed OBrien reminisces over this experience. His jaw was in his throat, hisà upper lip and teeth were gone, his one eye was shut, his other eye was a star-shaped hole, his eyebrows were thin and arched like a womans, his nose was undamaged, there was a slight tear at the lobe of one ear, his clean black hair was swept upward into a cowlick at the rear of the skull, his forehead was lightly freckled, his fingernails were clean, the skin at his left cheek was peeled back in three ragged strips, his right cheek was smooth and hairless, there was a butterfly on his chin, his neck was open to the spinal cord and the blood there was thick and shiny and it was this wound that had killed him.(OBrien p.124). Following his experience, he imagined what the mans life had been like before this. His memories created an existence for whom he killed. Memories are what kept them alive. He is astounded by what he has done, by what he had been forced to do. This novel, summarized, is about a young soldier who is overwhelmed by emotions and feelings about a war he wants nothing to do with. It conveys nearly every emotion that one can experience. It is because of these themes that people can even begin to understand what those living the war felt. As with most other veterans, OBrien experienced a loss so great, a burden so heavy, it is almost impossible to carry, but carry they did. They carried the burden of murders, the embarrassment of running, the bodies of their friends, and the memories that would haunt them for a lifetime. For these veterans the war will never end. This procedure allows great accuracy and quality, but lacks speed. McDonald's climate was not very appealing. Everything appeared to be focused around the business instead of the customers. Employees were working at a rapid pace, but it seemed like they had no time for customers. They acted as if it was a burden for them to stop and answer a simple question or refill a drink. The atmosphere was also very noisy. There was constant beeping, banging, and yelling coming from the ! service area. They did not provide a pleasant ambiance for cus! tomers to dine in. McDonald's communication and leadership were also lacking. The only communication between employees and customers was the placement of orders. The employees provided no feedback in terms of double-checking orders or communicating any delays that might occur. Communication between employees consisted of loud yelling throughout the kitchen. In terms of leadership, we did not see a manager present during our entire visit. Diagnosing Burger King was a little more difficult because they do not provide customers with literature (pamphlets) communicating goals and policies, as McDonald's does.
